“The Gospel was Hellenized in the second century in so far as the Gnostics in various ways transformed it into a Hellenistic religion for the educated. The Apologists (argued that) Christianity was the realization of an absolutely moral theism. This transformation of religion into a philosophic system would not have been possible had not Greek philosophy itself happened to be in the process of development into a religion.”
~Adolph Harnack, History of Dogma, Vol. III
The Greek philosophic traditions found a home in the 2nd century church. This seems to fly in the face of Paul’s warning in Colossians 2 when he says:
See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ. For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form” (Col 2:8-9, NASB).
Perhaps a return to the 1st century church teachings would be a good idea.
